Obituary
Galveston native, Wallace “Wally” H. Overly, Jr., age 77, passed away at his home in Hitchcock on Monday, February 29, 2016. Wally was born in Galveston, Texas, on November 29, 1938 to his parents, Wallace H. Overly Sr. Wallace Overly and Gladys May Moore Gladys Moore.
Wally lived in Galveston all his life on 14th and Winnie until he and Cyndi moved to Hitchcock in 2008. Anyone that knew Wally would know he was a fighter. He fought countless medical issues over the last 30 years and surpassed all expiration dates put on him by doctors. The family jokes that this was most likely due to his stubborn will and feisty personality. From a young age, Wally had many hobbies including fast cars, fishing, gardening and his beloved pigeons. He was an avid pigeon racer for at least 40 years before having to give it up due to health reasons. He was a member of GGC Pigeon Club and the American Racing Pigeon Club. Wally also loved animals more than most. He was a sucker for rescues and helping to give a home to animals that others had abandoned. The majority of his working life was spent with G & H Towing of Galveston, Texas, where he retired after 40 years as purchasing agent. Wally was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church for over 40 years.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Anna Winkler, and his daughter Debra Gale.
He is survived by common-law wife, loved partner and companion of 33 years, Cynthia Gregory, his son, Wallace H Overly, III, his grandchildren, Wendy Gale and Stormy Dey, his cousin Betty Johnson and his loving pets Penny and Rattler.
To sum up Wally would be impossible, as he was the epitome of the phrase “one of a kind.” But a close attempt would be that he was full of piss and vinegar, he was always right and he loved his family, friends and animals with his entire heart.
A celebration of life for Wally will be held at Malloy & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm with a funeral service at 7:00 pm led by Father John Donovan. All are welcome to come say goodbye to this cherished father, grandfather, friend and BOI.
The family would like to give a special thank you to all the nurses and doctors that have helped Wally over the years. We know he didn’t make it easy, but we appreciate you for the extra time you helped give us with our Wally.
