John left a will dated 20 July 1648 and a codicil 20 September 1650, proved in 1654 by son Robert acting for his own sons John and Robert, who were named executors but still minors. Published abstract at Internet Archive[1] and scans of the original with more detail at Ancestry.[2] He mentions son "Collonell Robert Overton" and daughter Grisell, Grisell's husband Thomas Williamson and daughter Joane Appleyard from her first marriage, other grandchildren Robert, Ebenezer, Anne, and Alicia Overton, his brothers William and Christopher, "my loving uncle Mr Gabriell Catherall", and other relatives and friends. He also mentions daughter Ann Overton, but she is likely to be his daughter-in-law Ann, wife of Robert, from the size and type of bequest. Uncle Gabriel Catherall may be the brother of Ellen Catherall who married Christopher Overton 1574 at Hollym about 7 miles from Easington.[3] From the information in the will, Christopher and Ellen seemed to be more likely parents for John than the ones attached at the moment. However, detailed notes by William L Deyo in his book The family and ancestry of William Dabney have Christopher as the father but Miss Wright as the mother, and state that Gabriel was her half brother, son of her mother's second husband John Catherall. He does not mention the marriage to Ellen Catherall.[4] Is Ellen in fact "Miss Wright" who had taken her stepfather's name? "Mrs Ellen Overton" was buried at Easington 21 October 1600[5] so further research needed to place her.
