Simone Ovide was born in 1913 in Haiti. Her parents were Jules Faine and Célie Ovide, a maid in the household. (Her death record lists her birth as 13 March 1914.[1]) As Célie was a maid, and Simone used Ovide as last name, it is assumed that Jules and Célie did not marry.
She spent much of her childhood in an orphanage. She trained as a nurse's aide, and later met and married physician François Duvalier in 1939. They had children Marie Denise, Nicole, Simone and Jean-Claude.
Her husband rose through the Haitian government and became president, making her first lady. After he died in 1971, the presidency went to their son Jean-Claude Duvalier. After Jean-Claude was ousted in 1986, Simone Duvalier joined her son and family in exile in France.
Simone Faine, age 83, died on 26 Dec 1997 in Saint-Cloud, Hauts-De-Seine, Paris, France.[1]
