Biography

Harriet Ellen "Hattie" Owen was the daughter of Joseph Russell Owen (1866–1941) and Grace Shoemaker (1871–1964), born on 16 Aug 1891 in Fostoria, Seneca County, Ohio. She also grew up in Fostoria, but her family moved to Detroit, where they appeared in the 1910 Census.[1][2][3][4]

Hattie married Prentice George Callin on 15 June 1910. Prentice was the son of John Henry Callin and Amanda Walker, born on 22 Sep 1887 in Middleton, Wood County, Ohio. He spent his childhood in Middleton, and later moved with his family to Fostoria. Prentice was listed in both the Owen household in Detroit and in the Callin household in Fostoria in 1910.[5][6][7][8][9]

Hattie and Prentice spent their first few years together in Fostoria, where they had their two sons, Owen and David. In 1915, they moved to Otsego County, New York, where Prentice's brothers, Herbert and John, were living and working as teachers. John and Prentice are said to have enlisted in the Ohio guard in 1918, but at the least, by the time he registered for the draft, Prentice had moved his family back to Bowling Green, where he established himself as a farmer.[10][11][12]

Prentice farmed and did clerical work during the 1920s and 1930s, and worked in the post office in the 1940s. Around 1950, Prentice retired from his farm, and he and Hattie moved to California to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In 1952, they lived in Norco, Riverside County, California.[13][14][15][16][17][18]

Prentice died on 15 June 1960, his 50th wedding anniversary, at age 72 in Vista, San Diego County. He was buried in Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside, San Diego County, California.[19][20][21]

Hattie followed her son, David, and his family when they moved to Washington state, and she died in Shelton, Mason county, Washington, on 1 Oct 1991. She was 100 years old, and was buried with Prentice in Eternal Hills Memorial Park. [22][23][24][25]
