Roy had sole control of Taylor Island after his brother Russell died. He decided to farm the island with sheep despite many failures to do by other people before him. He found a water source on the island, built concrete tanks and was able to carry 600 sheep. He also had another 200 sheep on nearby Trindal (the family called it "Garden") island.
