Biography

Jonathan Owen is the son of Robert Owen and Nancy (Foster) Owen. "Mr Owens, at his father's death, received a small patrimony, yet he succeeded by hard labor and great diligence in acquiring about 2,000 acres of land ...gave liberally of his means for the erection and establishment of Churches, as well as to encouraging public improvements, which would tend to be of benefit to the community and the commonwealth." [1]

On December 27, 1836, Jonathan married Cynthia Scott, daughter of William Scott and Sarah "Sally" (Hedges) Scott.

Jonathan and Cynthia had four children:

  • Sarah A Owen born 1837, married Edwin P. Bean and had ten children [2]
  • Nancy F Owen, 1839-1921, married Watson M. Gay
  • Mary E Owen born 1840
  • William Robert Owen born 1840

Cynthia died in 1868 and in 1870, Jonathan married his second wife, Mary Hutchcraft, daughter of John Hutchcraft and Margaret (McIlvain) Hutchraft.
