Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Margery (Owen) Sizemore was a Virginia colonist.

This profile represents the wife of William Sizemore and the mother of his children. See his profile for more information.

In 1712, one Margery Sizemore, lived in the same area of what was then Henrico Co., VA where William Sizemore received land in 1619.[1]

She died either 1750 in Lunenburg, Lunenburg, Virginia or in 1757 in Halifax, Halifax Co, Virginia.[citation needed]

Disputed Origins

Earlier versions of this profile claimed, citing only an online tree, that William Sizemore's wife was Mary Bright (1698-1746). But Mary Bright was actually wife of Ephraim Sizemore (1696 - 1740).

Some data may be from the highly unreliable Shawnee Heritage series.

That William Sizemore's wife's maiden name was Owen is suggested by the frequent use of "Owen" as a given name in subsequent generations. (But there is no evidence she herself named a son Owen.)

Others say she was Martha, Mary or Margery Owen (1670 - 1750) and born in London or Henrico Co., Virginia, daughter of George Owen (1640-1701) and Mary Knight (1645-1661). (WikiTree has her as Mary Naibor.

This identification is highly unlikely as this couple lived in New York[citation needed] and never had any presence in Virginia.

Sizemore researcher Joy King suggests she is most likely to have been daughter of Evan Owen and his wife Margery.[2]. This same reference points out that "[Records] also show she was Margery SISEMORE in 1712, living in the same area of then Henrico Co., VA (present Chesterfield Co.) where the 1st William SIZEMORE received land in 1619.

Children

The following is speculative; we seek sources and evidence to support that these were the children of William and Margery.

  1. Henry Sizemore 1698 - 1755
  2. William Ephraim Sizemore II 1700 - 1785
  3. Edward Sizemore 1720 - 1822

Research Notes

Wanda Ware DeGidio has documented court records from Henrico strongly supporting that the Margery Owen who married William Sizemore of Virginia was the orphaned daughter of Evan Owen and his wife, Margery:[3]

  • "Inventory of estate of Evan Owen and Margery his wife returned to court by Peter Field, it being inconsiderable, and out of it several debts to be paid, among these to Richard Holmes of Bristol Parish for nursing a young child of the deceased, also to widow Lockett, and to Samuel Newman for care of children. Estate to be sold and stay in hands of Henry Randolph for use of the children. One of the orphans, a female, about 1 year of age to be bound to Richard Holmes. 1 Dec 1691. p47 - p399.
  • In Dec 1691 Henrico Co. reimbursed Bristol Parish 200 pounds of tobacco paid to ye widdow Lockett in the last Levy for care of ye children of Evan Owen and his wife, Margery, who had both died. Henrico County Parish Records.
  • Will of Richard Holmes of Bristol Parish to wife Ann was witnessed by Thomas Chamberlayne, Daniel Jones and Margery Sismore. Recorded 7 July 1712. The estate of Evan Owen and Margery Owen, his wife, both dec'd, taken Nov. 1691, included a debt to Richard Homes whose will was witnessed by Margery Sisemore. Colonial Wills of Henrico Co., VA Part 1 (1677-1737) by Benjamin B. Weisiger III and p. 88-137 of Henrico County Wills and Deeds 1710-1714.

Henrico Co., VA records show Margery Owen [born 1690], daughter of Evan Owen and his wife Margery, was orphaned as an infant. Note: Widow Lockett mentioned above in 1691, was Margaret Osborne-2404, widow of Thomas Lockett-122 who died 1686 at Bristol Parish, Henrico Co, VA. The profile page Lockett-122 states he arrived in VA from Barbados. Some researchers have said they felt the Sizemore family also arrived from Barbados, and the connection to Lockett may be the source of that story.

Note: Margaret Osborne-2404 is widow Lockett. She is the d/o Thomas Osborne-2262, who was in the 1704-5 rent rolls at Henrico Co VA alongside Thomas Chamberlayne-7 and Richard Holmes.

Will of Richard Holmes of Bristol Parish to wife Ann was witnessed by Thomas Chamberlayne, Daniel Jones and Margery Sismore. Recorded 7 July 1712. Colonial Wills of Henrico Co., VA Part 1 (1677-1737) by Benjamin B. Weisiger III and p. 88-137 of Henrico County Wills and Deeds 1710-1714.

Note by Lilly Martin: Margery Owen-4843, wife of William Sizemore-380, was raised in part by Mrs. Thomas Lockett (Margaret Osborne-2404) and Richard Holmes. In 1712 Margery, then a married woman and adult, witnessed the will of Richard Holmes, who had been her childhood caregiver, as she was an orphan.

Margery Owen-4843 had an older brother, Richard Owen-2130 (also see Owen-2585 needs merge). Both Margery Sizemore and her brother Richard Owen left Henrico Co VA and both settled at Wynne's Creek, Banister River, Halifax Co VA as of 1752, but was Lunenburg Co VA from 1746.

The Y dna test for the descendants of Richard Owen result in M256, which is a typically British haplogroup. If we believe Margery Owen Sizemore to be the sister of Richard Owen, her neighbor, then we can say at least her father was British, and not Native American.

I *do not* believe Margery is our female connection to the male NA DNA results we have. I think that occurred much earlier. (Joy King)

In 1741 WILLIAM Sizemore had land surveyed in present Halifax Co., VA.

Jack Goins said the Owen and Sizemore families lived near each other in Colonial Virgina. (Note by Lilly Martin: this is correct. Richard Owen was Margery's brother and neighbor as well.)

Jack Goins said, A family named John Owen, (Also Owens,) owned adjoining land in VA. Note by Lilly Martin: that is correct, John Owen is the son of Richard Owen, the brother of Margery).

Researcher Joy King suggests Margery * may have been* the orphan of Evan Owen and his wife Margery.

In late 1600s, early 1700; the Owen and Womack families traveled possibly from from New Kent, or Charles City to Henrico Co, which became Goochland. From the above court records, and additional records below, we know that Evan Owen was the father of Margery Owen who married William Sizemore b. c1680 and Richard Holmes and the widow Lockett were involved in caring for Margery during her infancy and early childhood. Also, Major Richard Chamberlain is mentioned as a witness to the will of Richard Holmes as was Margery after her marriage to William Sizemore.

Evan Owen is said to have been born in Wales. His son's Y-dna is R, which is typical British.

Evan Owen died young, leaving young children, such as Richard Owen-2130 (needs merged with Owen-2585).

Margery Owen-4843 is perhaps also Evan's child. She married William Sizemore-380 and her first known record is in 1712 at Bristol Parish, Henrico Co, VA where she is called Margery Sizemore and witnessed a will.

Jack Goins wrote many years ago online: "A family named John Owen, (Also Owens,) owned adjoining land in VA

1740-50's with the Sizemore's and these families probably inter-married in the old days, thus passing this name Owen on to their children ."

This would explaim Edward Sizemore-38 naming one of his sons OWEN Sizemore. Researchers should list land records of early Virginia which show the Owen and Sizemore family near. This could help to substantiate that William Sizemore and his OWEN wife were parents of #38

Lilly (or others, really), I could use your help writing a proof (or strong evidence) statement, along the lines of:

That Margery, wife of William Sizemore, was a daughter of Evan Owen, is supported by the following:

Then a bulleted list with the different pieces of evidence, citing the specific records that support the evidence.

This profile appears to be a conflation of two people:

MARTHA was married to the first known Sizemore (William) to be in Virginia; they were adults and married in 1624. That William does not appear to have a profile on WikiTree (as of this writing). UPDATE March 2023: I have created a profile for this early William.

MARGERY is thought to be "orphan daughter of Evan Owen and his wife Margery" according to researcher Joy Wright King. She was an adult by 1712 when she was a witness to the will of Richard HOMES/HOLMES, at which time she was living in the same area of then Henrico Co., VA (present Chesterfield Co.) where the 1st William SIZEMORE (husband of Martha) received land in 1619.

Owen-4969 and Owen-4843 appear to represent the same person because: Years later, trying this again; these profiles both represent the supposed wife of William aka Ephraim Sizemore. Neither of these profiles is well sourced, and one of them appears to be relying on the the largely fictional Shawnee Heritage series. I have more info.
