Lucretia was born in 1848 In North Carolina, probably along the border of present-day Jackson and Transylvania Counties. Her parents were Jesse and Judith Owen Reid.
Lucretia first appears in the records of the 1850 census. The location of the homestead of her parents was at that time in Macon County, North Carolina. She was two years old.[1]
In 1860, the census taker entered all of the names on his round with two initials and the surname. Thus, Lucretia is listed as L P Owen, age 12. There were five more children living in the household since the last census, the youngest of which was only three months old. Lucretia was living in the new county of Jackson, and by the next census would be living in her third consecutive county by the creation of new ones. Her father, Jesse, had by now become an extensive landowner and one of the wealthier members of the community.[2]
In the midst of the turmoil of the Civil War, [[Galloway-2851|Clifford Galloway] bonded to marry Lucretia, on 8 June 1864 in the newly formed County of Transylvania. As was the custom, the bond was to be returned after the ceremony. However, this bond was not returned. This doesn't mean that Clifford and Lucretia were not married. In subsequent census records, Clifford and Lucretia would be listed as spouses.[3] [4]
In 1870, the Galloway farm lay in the Gloucester Township of Transylvania County, North Carolina. The census taker that year had difficulty with the names of nearly everyone in the family, including spelling the surname incorrectly (Gallaway). Lucretia's birth year was inferred from her age and was off by three years. The suspicion is that someone other than a family member gave the information for this family. Three children were living in the household, all under the age of five.[5]
Between 1870 and 1880, the Galloway family moved west across the county line into the Canada section of Jackson County, North Carolina, to establish a new farm. In that latter census year, there were now eight children, five boys and three girls, living in the household, several old enough to have chores to help maintain the farm.[6]
In 1900, Lucretia (called Pernetta in that year's census) was now 52 years old. She and her husband, Clifford, still had six sons living at one, the youngest, "Cromwell" (Culwell) was 20. William was misidentified as "Wiele." Lucretia could read and write English. The farm and house where she and her family lived was owned, not rented, and free of mortgage. Clifford told the census taker that he was a Confederate veteran, but no documentary evidence for this has been found[7]
The 1910 census was the last for Lucretia's husband, Clifford. He would die in 1915.[8] Lucretia still had two children in the household, sons Milford and Wedia (known as Wed). The census taker recorded that Lucretia bore 13 children, 12 of which were still alive. The family was living on River Road in the Canada section of Jackson County, North Carolina.[9]
In 1920, "The Widow Galloway" was still living on the farm which she and Clifford established in the Canada section of Jackson County. Two sons and a young granddaughter, Marie, age 11, were helping to maintain the farm and take care of Lucretia, who was now 71 years old.[10]
Lucretia appears in her last census in 1930, being enumerated by W. D. Parker. She was living with her son Cullwell. (Her son, Milford, was also living in the household.). Lucretia was 82 year old and was considered literate.[11]
Lucretia died on 29 May 1935 in the Wolf Mountain section of Jackson County, near where she had lived all of her life. She was 87 years old. The "probable cause" of death was listed as "paralysis" on Lucretia's death certificate.[12] She was buried at Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in Transylvania County, behind the church (There is another part of the cemetery across the road.).[13] The unusual thing is that she is not buried beside her husband. There's a story to tell there, but the difficulty is that with the passage or time, there is no one left to tell it.
