Biography

US Black Heritage Project
George Owens is a part of US Black heritage.

George was born about 1853, possibly in Talbot County, Georgia, the son of Washington Owens.(See Research Notes) In December 1878, he married Jennie Turner in Freestone County, Texas.[1] In 1880, George (22, GA) and Jennie (18, GA) were in Freestone County, Texas, with no children in the household.[2] According to later Census, George and Jennie had at least the following children, all in Freestone County, Texas:

  1. Rosa Owens (1881-1965) m1 George W Allen m2 ? Howard
  2. Cora Owens (1883-1966) m Reuben Woodward
  3. William Owens (1884- [aft 1940]) m Cora Freeman
  4. Tenola W "T Will" Owens (1885-1956) m Elvira Bailey
  5. Curtis Owens (1888-1935) m1 Maxie Freeman m2 Lannie Wilson
  6. Curnel Owens (1891-1967) m ?

The 1900 Census shows George (47, GA) and Jennie (41, TX) as having been married 21 years, with 8 children born and 6 (listed above) living and in the household. Also in the household is granddaughter Osia/Ocie Bell (4, TX), daughter of Rosa.[3] They remained in the same location in 1910, married 31 years. Some of the children have married or are gone from the household, and they have added a grandson, Levi Shed (6, TX). They owned a farm, with a mortgage.[4]

In 1920, George is still in Freestone County, living by himself, age 68, born in TX, next door to son Tenola and his family.[5] He passed away in 1927 and is buried at Pine Top Cemetery in Freestone County, Texas.[6]

Research Notes

— Place of birth is uncertain. He claims Texas on some census and Georgia on others. If Georgia, this may be his family.[7] Also enumerated: possible father (Washington Owen; b 1822, GA), siblings and paternal grandmother (Sarah Owen, b 1785, GA). Possible uncle in previous household on census.
— Granddaughter Ocie Bell Owens married a "Curvey". Informant on her mother's death certificate.
