Biography

Born 1787 Georgia

Died AFT 1860. Nacogdoches County, Texas.

Phillip Owens Sr. was born in Williamsburg, South Carolina, 1787. He was the son of Lewis Owens and Lucy Daniel. Both his parents lived their entire lives in S.C. Phillip moved to Alabama between 1816 & 1819. We know this period to be correct because his second child Walter Owens was born 5 Jul 1815 in South Carolina and his fourth child Jim Owens was born 2 Jun 1818 in Monroe, Alabama.
While in South Carolina, Phillip married Martha A. Byrd (m. 1815 Marion County S.C.), the daughter of Arthur Byrd and Elizabeth Ann Harreison Byrd. Martha was born 1798 in South Carolina. There are conflicting records as to the number of children Phillip and Martha had, but a minimum of 12 is certain and possibly as many as 18. In the 1840 census we find 11 children; (1) Thomas Daniel OWENS b: 1814 SC, (2) Walter OWENS b: 15 Jul 1815 in , South Carolina, (3) Elizabeth OWENS, (4) Jim OWENS b: 2 Jun 1818 in Monroe, Alabama, (5) Samuel OWENS b: 1828 in Alabama, (6) John OWENS b: 1825 in Alabama, (7) Phillip OWENS b: 1830 in Monroe, Alabama, (8) Malachi OWENS b: Aug 1832 in Monroe, Alabama, (9) Mary OWENS b: 1834 in Monroe ,Alabama, (10) Stephen OWENS b: 1836 in Monroe, Alabama, and (11) Lucy OWENS b: 1838 in ,Monroe, Alabama. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
He and his family had moved to Monroe County Alabama by 1824. We know this because he received a land grant on that date. He continued to reside in Monroe County Alabama through 1850 where he appears on the US census. By 1860 he had relocated to Nacogdoches County Texas. I think the date was 1857 but I know in 1860 he appears on the Beat 5, Nacogdoches, Texas, United States US census. There was a reason for the move, other than seeking greener pastures.
He and his extended family departed Alabama to avoid prosecution and possible retribution resulting from a shooting incident, which resulted in loss of life. One of his sons, Jim Owens had befriended a Texas plantation owner and was offered the job of overseer. The combination of the shooting incident and subsequent job offer made the move to Texas too attractive to resist. The plantation owner, Mr. Isbell went off to War and left Jim Owens behind to manage the plantation and care for the family. After the Civil War, the owner deeded some land to Jim Owens, in payment for his work. Later he moved around Nacogdoches or Rusk Co, where other Isbells lived. Three of Jim Owens children married Isbells. In later years Jim became a Methodist preacher according to Anne Sanderson letters.
Many of Phillip Owens Sr. children and their families returned to Alabama but many remained in Texas. Phillip Owens Sr. and his wife Martha were among the ones who remained in Texas. Phillip Jr. more properly known as Phillip Marion Owens moved back to Alabama. Phillip Owens Sr. and Martha died in Nacogdoches, Texas and are buried in Linn Flat Cemetery.
There is an issue regarding Phillip Sr. place of interment, two Cemeteries exist in Nacogdoches, both with the name "Linn Flat Cemetery". One is northeast of a large clearing and the other west of it, separated by only a mile or so. After due diligence I assume with some small cemetery this is the correct Linn Flat cemeteries. We do know that his wife was buried in the same cemetery. Find A Grave: Memorial #127138627

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Phillip by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Phillip:

In the United States Census, 1860 of Beat No 5 E, Nacogdoches, Texas, Phillip Owens stated his place of birth to be Georgia.

In the book "Nacogdoches County Families, Volume 1 pg 500" ISBN: 088107036X, 9780881070361, it is stated that Phillip and Martha are buried at the Pirtle Cemetery, near Cushing, TX.

This book also list Jane Weeks Owens as a daughter of Phillip and Martha. I will need to see additional support to accept Jane as their daughter.
