My grandmother, Dee as she was called, was a simple woman who loved her husband and family above all else. She worked hard raising 6 children during the Depression and multiple grandchildren that she took care of for their parents. She loved to talk and could talk to you for hours and listen to your hurts, concerns and feelings. She always had a kind, wise word to offer. She was truly honest and also able to guide the loved one in the way they should go without raising her voice or showing anger. She was the one person in my life that I wanted to emulate above all others. I think I have succeeded in that.
I lived with my grandparents for a year while I attended Austin College. One time I came home very late from a date. As I entered the front door, she met me and said, Your grandfather is in the bathroom. You better scoot yourself into bed."
She never asked where I had been or why I was so late. I felt embarrassed that I had put her into such a predicament as to have to cover for me.
