Gustaf was born September 3, 1648, at Stockholm Castle, as the son of Gabriel Oxenstierna af Korsholm och Wasa and his wife Maria Christina av Löwenstein och Scharffeneck. Queen Christina and her mother Maria Eleonora were his godparents and he was named after Christina's father, King Gustav Adolf.
Gustaf studied in Heidelberg in 1665, and he became the king's chamberlain in 1671. In 1677 he bacame the lieutenant-colonel of Västgöta kavalleriregemente, only to be discharged a year later.
February 4, 1680, Gustaf Adolf married the countess Chrisitna Douglas, the daughter of Robert Douglas and his wife Hedvig Mörner. Together they had seven children.
He passed away in 1697.
