Norton, Smith and Co., solicitors, and was admitted to practice in 1881. He returned early in 1882 to Bowral, where he practised as a solicitor until about 18 months ago. He was a grandson of Lieut. John Oxley, RN, the well-known explorer, who was later appointed Surveyor-General. Lieut. Oxley selected an area of 2,400 acres on the western bank of the Mittagong rivulet, which included the present Wingecarribee property. The site of the present town of Bowrall was granted to John Oxley's widow, Mrs. .John Norton Oxley, and Henry Molesworth Oxley (Mr. Oxley's father) as a free gift in consideration of his services to the State. Two hundred acres were laid out as a private village in 1862 and ,the surrounding country was cut up into farming blocks. The village was first called Wingecarribee, then Burradoo and later Bowral. 'The first house at Bowral was a rough bark hut eracted by Mr. Oxley's father. This was replaced in 1857 by a house constructed of iron which was imported from England in sections. The late Mr. Oxley took a keen interest in the Bowral Municipal Council and was an alderman for many years. He occupied the mayoral chair in 1895 and also from 1905 to 1908 inclusive. He was joint secretary of the Bowral Cottage Hospital when it was built in 1889, and held this position for several years. He also took a keen interest in the School of Arts and other organisations, of which he was a committee man for many years. In 1898 Mr, Oxley married Miss Kathleen Johnston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Johnston, of Queensland, who with one daughter, Jean, and one son, Sgt. J. M. Oxley, A.I.F., survive. The Wingecarribee property was conducted as a dairy farm and in 1907 the manufacturer of cheese was commenced on the property. The cheese factory was formerly a co-Operative butter factory, and as supplier withdrew from it on leaving the district, Mr. Oxley acquired their shares. Wingecarribee cheese has been a consistent prize-winner at the Royal Sydney Show for years and in 1912 the cheesemaker, Mr. Ben Pearce, gained the coveted gold medal for the most successful maker.
