Biography

Martha Pabodie, the daughter of William Pabodie and Elizabeth Alden, and granddaughter of Pilgrim John Alden, was born 24 Feb 1650 (old style) at Duxbury, Massachusetts.[1][2] Note that the Mayflower Society "Silver Book 2002" has the date for Martha's birth as 6 Mar 1650/1, using the same references[3] which is the New Style date including the addition of the "missing" days. Genealogical tradition does not include these missing days.

She married first Samuel Sebury, 4 April 1677 in Duxbury, as his second wife[4][3] Dr. Seabury, born 10 Dec 1640 in Boston, son of John and Grace (____) Seabury, died at Duxbury 6 Aug 1681. His first wife was Patience Kemp (died 1676). His children by Patience were: Elizabeth, Sarah, Samuel, Hannah, John Grace and Patience, and John.[3]Seabury made a will 21 Sep 1680, proved 8 Oct 1681. He name wife Martha and children Elizabeth, Sarah (no longer in New England), Samuel, Hannah, John, Joseph, and Martha.[3] [Plymouth Co PR 4:1:93; Episcopal Ch Mag 125; MD 141:139-40]

Her second husband was William Fobes. They were married about 1682. William was the son of John and Constant (Mitchell) Fobes. Born about 1649, he died 6 Nov 1712 in his 63rd year probably in Little Compton, Rhode Island, where he was buried as "Lieutennant" William Fobes. He was not previously married to Elizabeth Southworth.[3]

William "Vobs" of Bridgewater was on of the original grantees of land in Saconet (Little Compton) 29 April 1675 [Bristol Co LR 3: 455-57; TAG 61: 133-34], but he was a taylor of Duxbury, in 1683 when he sold land in Little Compton.[Bristol Co. LR 1:40] by 8 Jan 1689, William, and presumably the rest of his family were residents of Little Compton, Rhode Island. [3][Bristol Co LR 2:164]

19 Jan 1700/1 William Fobes of Little Compton, yeoman, gave to his daughter in law Martha Sebury 12 acres in Little Compton for "love and affection and £6. 1 Feb 1704/5 he sold Joseph Seabury 70 acres and 10 June 1708 he deeded land to his son in law William Briggs and daughter Elizabeth.[3][Bristol Co LR 3:248, 4:395 6:64]

William Pabodie, Martha's father, died in 1707 leaving an estate of £407. He left the land to his sons (some after wife's decease), and left his daughters, Mary, Mercey, Martha, Ruth, Sarah, Hannah, Lidia (also received a pair of green curtains), the heirs of Elizabeth and the heirs of Rebecca only one shilling each.[3][5]

William Fobes' will date 4 Nov 1712 at Little Compton named the following legatees: son-in-law [step-son] Joseph Seabery; son-in-law Josiah Sawer and his now wife Martha Sawyer; daughter Elizabeth Briggs, wife of William Briggs; Elizabeth's eldest son Lovet Briggs; daughter Constant Little; grandson Fobes Southworth (still under age); grandson Samuel Seabery; grandson John Sawyer; son-in-law John Little and my daughter his now wife Constant & to her heirs lawfully begotten of her Body" unless Constant died without issue (in which case it reverts to grandson Fobes Southworth, or if Constant chooses Rebecca Southworth of any of William's other grandchildren). Joseph Seabury and Silvester Richmond were appointed overseers. An invetory was taken 12 Nov 1712.[3][Bristol co PR 3:112-16 and Little Compton PR 6:296; MD 41:141-42]. Edward Southworth unsuccessfully contested the will. [3]

"The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011" by The New England Historic Genealogical Society, Volume 115, page 259 says that she died on 25 January 1712 at the age of 61. I also have "Mayflower Births and Deaths, Vol. 1, page 6 which gives her birth date as 24 Feb in Duxbury (not 25). Perhaps a typo as the body of the bio says 24 and the header info says 25.
