Biography
She married May 15, 1920 in Ada, OK to Burdette Orion Wise.[1] Velma was born in Sugden, Comanche County, Indian Territory. After graduating from Addington High School in 1916, Velma enrolled in Central State, Edmond, OK. There she met "Bert" Wise, who was also a student. In 1918, Bert enlisted in the Army but before sailing for France he and Velma became engaged. Velma decided to seek a teaching position and was hired to teach at Comanche, OK where she taught until she married in 1920. Velma and Bert attended summer school each year until they graduated in 1926 from East Central State College with a B.S. Ed. Velma majored in Home Economics and History. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a National Honorary Teaching Fraternity. In 1943, she became a civilian instructor of electrical systems, USAF Mechanics School and Bert became a civilian instructor in hydraulic systems, They taught at Amarillo AFB, Keesler AFB, and Sheppard AFB. Velma took a medical retirement in 1963 due to the debilitating effect of Parkinson’s Disease. She joined the Methodist Church as a girl but after marriage, she joined the Christian Church with her husband. She was a beautiful young woman, tall (5'10") and very slender. She had light brown hair which had a reddish cast and brown eyes. She had a keen wit and a sense of humor. She wrote poetry and had a good contralto singing voice. Velma is buried in the Eat Hill Cemetery, Roff, OK
