Thelma M. Packer Hummer was born on 6 Oct 1912[1] in Progress, Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, USA,[2] the daughter of Roy L. Packer and Ethel C. Akens. [3] She was a 1930 graduate of Susquehanna High School.[4] She married Glenn F. Hummer on 6 Sep 1939 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County.[5] For 35 years, Thelma was employed as a teller at the Hershey National Bank, and she was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Cocoa Avenue in Hershey.[6] Her husband, Glenn, died in 1977, [7] and she eventually moved to Kindred Place in Annville, Lebanon County, and later to Luther Acres in Lititz, Lancaster County. Thelma Hummer died on 7 Jul 2000[8] at her home in Lititz, Lancaster County.[9] She was buried on 10 July 2000 in Hershey Cemetery, Hershey, Derry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.[10]
Thelma and Glenn's engagement was announced in The Evening News on Monday, 22 Aug 1938, and reads: "Miss Packer is Engaged to Wed--Mr. and Mrs. Roy Packer, of Hershey, have announced the engagement of their daughter, Miss Thelma M. Packer, to Glenn F. Hummer, son of Mrs. Agnes Hummer, also of Hershey. No date has been set for the wedding. The announcement was made known on Saturday afternnon at a bridge luncheon given at the Summer home of Miss Packer's sister, Mrs. Charles Hummer, of Hershey. The teable centerpiece was of Talisman roses and yellow candles, and the announcements were written on the placecards. Both Miss Packer and Mr. Hummer are employed by the Hershey Estates. uests at the party were: Mrs. Paul Stern, Manheim; Mrs. Dale Kurtz, Youk; Mrs. Charles Long, Mrs. Warren Cless, Mrs. Walter Brodhecker, and Mrs. William McGuire, of Harrisburg; Miss Mary Morrison, Miss Violet Hartung, Miss Mary Hummer, Mrs. Paul Hummer, Mrs. John Barnard, Mrs. Freda Baker, Mrs. Charles Hummer, Mrs. Agnes Hummer, and Mrs. Roy Packer, of Hershey."[11]
Thelma’s obituary was published in the Lebanon Daily News on 8 Jul 2000, and reads: “Thelma M. Packer Hummer, 87, of Luther Acres, Lititz, formerly of Kindred Place United Church of Christ Home, Annville, died Friday, July 7, 2000, in Luther Acres. She was the wife of the late Glen F. Hummer. Born in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, she was a daughter of the late Roy L. and Ethel V. Akens Packer. She was a teller at Hershey National Bank for 35 years. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hershey, and the Lydia Circle of the Lutheran Church Women. She graduated from Susquehanna Township High School in 1930. Surviving are a son, the Rev. Larry G. Hummer of Ephrata; a grandson, Matthew Hummer of Ephrata; and a sister, Kathryn Hummer of Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Packer. Services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in Holy Trinity Church, Hershey, with the Rev. Winfield Devonshire officiating. Interment will be in Hershey Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the church on Monday from 12:30 p.m. until time of service.”[12]
Another obituary from the Reading Eagle/Reading times published on 8 July 2000, reads: “Thelma M. Hummer, 87, formerly of Hershey, died Friday morning in her residence at Luther Acres, Lititz, Lancaster County. Hummer had previously resided at Kindred Place United Church of Christ Home, Annville, Lebanon County. Her husband, Glenn F. Hummer, died May 1, 1977. Born in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, she was a daughter of the late Roy L. and Ethel V. (Akens) Packer. Hummer was employed for many years as a teller by Hershey National Bank. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Hershey. Hummer was a 1930 graduate of Susquehanna Township High School. She is survived by a son, the Rev. Larry G., Ephrata, and a sister, Kathryn Hummer, Elizabethtown, Lancaster Count. Services will be on Monday at 2 p.m. in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Hershey Cemetery, The Roseboro Funeral Home, Denver, Lancaster County, is in charge of arrangements.”[13]
