Event: I met my Great Uncle David when I was a child in the in the early 70s. It was around the time he married his third wife, Marjory. I was surprised to find out in doing genealogy that he lived so near us, since my sense at the time was that he was kind of a "long-lost" favourite uncle of my mother.
He had some quite amazing stories to tell, most of which I assume were not true. He told us that when the film "Lawrence of Arabia" was released he had been asked to speak at the opening. As I understood the story he first joined the French Foreign Legion, then, I think deserted to become Lawrence's Aide de Camp. He showed me a photo of himself in military garb sitting at the base of the Sphinx before her legs had been discovered under the sand. He gave me his sword belt that he received during his service in the French Foreign Legion.[1]
