Biography

Frederick's birth date is taken from the admissions register of Doctor Barnardo's School in Tower Hamlets where he was admitted on 13 January 1891[1]. He left there on 8 November the following year and applied to join the Army soon after. Curiously, he used the name Frederick Joseph Hale when he enlisted; Hale was his mother's maiden name.

He enlisted with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, originally for three years with another nine years in the Reserve, but ended up serving thirteen years, being discharged on 21 April 1916 never having risen above Private. The medical officer noted several tattoos on Frederick's body including two professing his love for Nellie Robins, and "J Padwick, J Hale, two men on chest". He served in Gibraltar, Bermuda, South Africa, and France for the first two years of WWI. Listed on his discharge papers are the names of his wife Edith Amy Hampson and their first daughter Florence Minnie. His intended address was 95 St Pauls Rd, Mile End; this was next door to his aunt Mrs. H. Hale who, with his sister Mrs. Caroline Dix, was listed as next of kin.[2]

It is not known when Frederick died.
