Biography

Howard Douglas was born on 24 March 1907 at Kadina, South Australia, the son of Arthur James Page and Sarah Ann (Annie) Page formerly Hallard. [1]

From The News (Adelaide, SA) dated 19 December 1928, Pg 4 -
Richmond Magistrates' Court
For having failed to have lights at night on stationary motor cars Albert Henry Stasinowsky, Harold Albert Richards, Leslie Clifford Watson, and Howard Douglas Page were each fined £1 with £1 costs. [2]

Howard Douglas Page married Christina Jessie Halliday on 9 April 1932 at St Saviour's Church, Glen Osmond, South Australia. Records state Howard was single and aged 25. His father was named as Arthur James Page. Christina was a spinster aged 25. Her father was named as Thomas King Halliday. [3]

In the 1939 and 1941 South Australian electoral rolls Howard and Christina were living at 229 Glen Osmond Rd, Burnside. Then in the 1943 roll they were residing at 18 Watson Rd, Rose Park. Howard was employed as a clerk. [4]

Howard Douglas Page completed an Australian Military Forces Mobilization Attestation Form on 17 December 1941 at Kensington, South Australia, No. S112257. Of Howard it was recorded he was born on 24 March 1907 at Kadina, South Australia and was then aged 34 years. He was a qualified accountant and had an A.I.F.A. [Australian Finance Industry Association] diploma. However at that time he was working as a clerk for Nestle's & Anglo Saxon [sic] Co. Howard had married wife Christina Jessie Page on 9 April 1932 and had two children. His home address was 229 Glen Osmond Rd, Frewville, later amended to 18 Watson Ave, Rose Park and then to 22 Chatsworth Grove, Toorak Gardens. Physically he was described as 5 feet, 7 inches in height with a medium complexion and brown hair and eyes. He had an operation scar over his left kidney. It was further noted he was Fit for Class II B [fit for any duty other than with field formations] because of his vision. Two small black and white photographs were attached, one of him facing forward, the other side on.
On 10 February 1943 Howard was called up and commenced FTD [full time duty]. On 12 February he joined the 14 Australian Training Company. Then on 26 March 1943 Howard transferred to HQ SAL of C as a clerk. He was promoted to Acting Corporal on 21[?] May and had his rank of Corporal confirmed on 20 December 1943. On 31 July 1944 Howard's medical class was assessed as A2 [fit for specified duties in any unit in which the particular disability is no bar] as he had an artificial right eye and chronic sinusitis. On 5 October 1944 Howard was transferred to 5 Australian AOD [5AAOC]. On 7 February 1945 he was admitted to 121 Australian General Hospital with an infected eye socket. Howard was discharged and sent to SAL of C Area RR & GDD [Recruit Reception and General Details Depot] on 17 February 1945. He rejoined his unit [5AAOD] on 20 February 1945. Howard was discharged on 18 December 1945 at Hampstead Barracks. [5]

Howard Douglas Page died on 28 April 1988 aged 81 years. His ashes were buried on 18 September 1988 at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, Mitcham City, South Australia [Plot: Native/Shrub Area E/120]. [6]

Christina Jessica Page died on 21 August 1990 aged 83 years. Her ashes were buried on 18 September 1991 at Centennial Park Cemetery, Pasadena, Mitcham City, South Australia [Plot: Native/Shrub Area E/120]. [7]
