Biography

Alfred was born in Headley, Surrey on 11th October 1843[1][2], the son of Thomas Page and Eliza Page (Baker).[3][4] He was baptised in Headley on 27th October 1843.[5]
In 1861, at the age of 17, Alfred was living with his family in Headley. Following in his brother William's footsteps, he was working as a Bricklayer's Labourer.[4]
Alfred married Sarah Elizabeth Lucus[6] on 30 August 1863.[7] They had four children.
In 1871[8], 1881[9], 1891[10], and 1901[11] Alfred was living in Ashtead, Surrey with his family and working as a Bricklayer.
Sarah passed away in 1902 and in 1911, aged 69, Alfred was living at Epsom Union Workhouse, Dorking Road, Epsom, Surrey.[12]
Alfred passed away at Epsom Infirmary on 20 September 1912, aged 68 years.[13][14] He was buried in St Giles, Ashead, on 25th September 1912.[15]

Research Notes

The marriage certificate[7] for Alfred and Sarah has Alfred's father's name as "John Page" and his occupation as "Bailiff". Other records[3][4][5] suggest that Alfred's father was Thomas Page, a Farm Labourer. Every other detail is as expected: Alfred Page, bricklayer, and Sarah Elizabeth Lucus, both of Headley, Surrey. Further, the first witness is William Page, we know that Alfred had an older brother called William. As no other likely records can be found, it is reasonable to assume that the name was an error. Thomas would have been 60 at the time of Alfred's wedding and may have stopped his work as an agricultural labourer. Thomas died in 1870 and so we cannot check his occupation in the 1871 census.

Research Notes

Alfred's death certificate records his age at death as 69 years. However, if his birth and death dates are correct, he was actually 21 days short of his 69th birthday.
