Biography

Robert[1][2] L[3] Page[1][2][3][4] son of Anderson Page and his wife, Frances "Fannie" Williams,[2][1] was born Jul 4 1804 in Virginia,[4] or North Carolina,[5] or Kentucky, [6] [7] or more probably Spartanburg District, South Carolina, where his parents lived at that time.[8]

The family moved about 1815,[8] to Cumberland County, Kentucky.[9] Other relatives had moved to the area before them.[8] The area where they settled became Monroe County in 1820,[8] where they are listed on the 1820 census.[10] They lived on Mud Camp Creek.[9] In 1823, a survey of the county line between Cumberland and Monroe Counties, Kentucky, placed Anderson Page and his family back in Cumberland County.

Robert was married to Mary Park[4] Dec 21 1823 in Monroe County, Kentucky.[1] They were the parents of the following children:[1][4]

  1. Frances Ann Page, married Napoleon Bonaparte Hayes
  2. Ruth D, married Jacob Edwards
  3. Joseph Pendleton married Martha L Pogue
  4. William James married Nancy Cobb
  5. Thomas B
  6. Elizabeth

Mary (Park) Page died about 1843. Robert Page then married a second time to Rebecca Dean, May 9 1844 in Barren County, Kentucky.[1][11] They had the following children:[1][4]

  1. John W
  2. Jane
  3. Henry Clay
  4. Robert C

Robert Page lived in Monroe, Barren and Logan Counties, Kentucky,[1] before 1847,[4] when he decided to emigrate. With their property packed in a 4-horse wagon, they headed across the state. When they reached the Ohio River at Shawneetown, Illinois, one of the tires from a wagon wheel was lost in the crossing. After getting the wheel repaired, they continued the journey and settled in Scott County, where he rented a farm from Robert Marshall. From there he moved to Lynnville, Morgan County, Illinois, where he rented a farm east of the town for two years.[4]

In 1850, Robert and his family appear on the Scott County, Illinois census. He was a farmer, with a property valuation of $350 (shown as born in North Carolina), and could not read and write. Next door was his married daughter, Ruthie and her husband Jacob Edwards.[12]

Robert purchased land in Scott County, Illinois, 40 acres from Alfred Thompson, and 40 acres from W. Batty. After two years he sold out and again became a renter.[4]

The 1850 Federal Census Agriculture Schedule for Scott County, Illinois, shows he owns 20 acres of improved land, and 60 acres of unimproved land, for a total estimated value of $320; his farming implements and machinery were valued at $80; he owned 2 horses; two milch cows, 6 head of other cattle; and 22 head of swine for a total valuation of livestock of $385. He also had 40 bushels of wheat and 100 bushels of Indian corn. Unlike many of his neighbors, he did not keep sheep.[13]

In 1859, he moved to Camden County, Missouri, where he rented an 80-acre farm, and improved it. He was a solid Republican, in an area where many were from the South, and with the Civil War threatening, he felt his life was in jeopardy. He again moved his family to Scott County, Illinois, renting until 1865, when he purchased a small farm in Greene County.[4] In the 1870 census, it is not noted that he couldn't read or write.

Robert died May 9 1877 in Greene County, Illinois.[4][1]

Research Notes

1860 Census of Morgan County, IL p.169 and 170 CONT CENSUS YR: 1860 TERRITORY: IL COUNTY: Morgan DIVISION: Murrayville Pct. REEL NO: M653 213 PAGE NO: 169 and 170-- http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilmaga/census-morg50/233.htm this source reference is incorrect, as it refers you to the 1850 census, and no Page family is shown there.[8]

Robert's family may appear in the census twice, in Camden County, MO and in Greene County, IL. The names are the same, but the ages and birthplace of the children don't match completely. I have been unable to find the 1860 Morgan County, IL census. It needs to be double checked.[8]

The issue of his literacy could be established by locating deeds where he sold property, to see if he signed or made his mark. His brother, Joshua Page, born 1802, should have received the same schooling as Robert. Joshua was able to read and write, and taught school.

History of Morgan County, Illinois 1878 gives another child to Robert and Mary Park, named Aeneas T.; it omits Thomas B and Elizabeth. The history also omits the daughter, Jane, of Robert and Rebecca Dean.

Probate or deed records need to be examined to see how his land was divided after hiis death. Did some of his children d.s.p. before him, perhaps as children?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
