Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Page was a Virginia colonist.

John Page [1][2] the son of Exolheath Page [3] and his wife, Christian, was born circa 1741. His birthplace is not known, but sometime before 1753 the family moved to Goochland County, Virginia, where John grew to manhood. He first appeared on a tithable list for Exolheath Page in 1757, placing his birth about 1740/41. He appeared for several years on tithable lists as "John Page, son of Exol," appearing in the Exolheath Page tithable list for the last time in 1761, the year he was married.[4]

Marriage

In 1761, he received 100 acres of land on Lickinghole Creek from his father.[5] He was married in Goochland County to Edith Cauthon on 31 Oct 1761. [6] They were the parents of the following children:

  1. Leonard Page, born 22 Sep 1762, died 28 Mar 1836; married first Jane "Jenny" Hodges; married second Priscilla King
  2. Jesse Page, born 2 May 1763, died about 1793; married Molly Lemay
  3. Elizabeth "Betsy" Page, born 24 Jun 1767, died after 1832; married David Saunders
  4. James Page, born 12 Nov 1769, may have died after 1788, not in father's will
  5. Nancy Page, born 13 Dec 1772, died 1828; married William B. Page
  6. Sally Page, born 15 Mar 1773, not in her father's will
  7. Lewis Page, born about 1784, died 13 Apr 1868

John stayed in Goochland County, while others of the Page clan removed to other parts of Virginia, and other states. He was charged with trespassing, assault and battery in 1758, before his marriage.[7] Similar charges against him were made in 1761 and 1763.[8] He was charged with counterfeiting in 1763.[9]

Death

John signed his will on 10 Mar 1803, which was probated 17 Sep 1804 in Goochland County, Virginia. He named his second wife, Hannah, and his surviving children, also leaving money to the children of his deceased son, Jesse Page. The estate was appraised 31 Oct 1804. He had 50 acres of land still in his possession at his death, which his Executor, his son Leonard Page, sold to his son-in-law, William Page, who had married Nancy Page.

Research Notes

Two John Pages born 5 or 6 years apart, lived in Goochland County, Virginia in the 1750s and 1760s. John Page, son of Exolheath was about 5 or 6 years younger than the John Page, referred to as John Page Jr., with father John Page Sr. On 14 Nov 1756, John Page Jr. married Unity Harris in Goochland County, Virginia, when John Page son of Exolheath was aged 16 years and taxed with his father in 1757, continuing there until 1761 when he married Edith Cauthon. Unity Harris lived until after 1798, so the same John could not have been married to both Unity and Edith. In addition, John Page Jr. had left Goochland County by late 1767. He appeared in 1777 in Pitt County, and also was in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He and his wife, Unity, signed deeds in both counties. He died before 28 Feb 1798 when his heirs began selling his land in North Carolina. Unity was in North Carolina in 1798. John Page, son of Exolheath Page, who married Edith Cauthon and Hannah Pace, lived until 17 Sep 1804 and died in Goochland County, Virginia, survived by his wife Hannah.[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

I believe Nancy Page has an incorrect birth date, as it is incompatible with that of Sally Page, whose birth date came from the parish register. Her birth appears in the Douglas Register on page 264, original page 94. Nancy does not appear at all, nor does the oldest child Leonard or the youngest child, Lewis. Does anyone know where Nancy Page's birth date came from? could it be a year earlier?
The text says his birth location is not known, so I removed "Goochland, Goochland, Virginia" from the datafield.

I have read that Axolheath Page was Justice of the Peace, Magistrate, or Sheriff and was responsible for operating a home for orphans. That is why so many descendants intermarried (non-biological siblings) and many lines seem to end here. I will provide source when I see it again

I don't at all doubt the existence of John's will as stated, nor his marriage to Hannah, but does anybody have access to an original scan, link, or at least a full transcription? It would be great to have solid sourcing for this, especially since there is a lot of false/confused information floating around the 2 contemporary John Pages from Goochland County, as well as other members of the family from these times.

Page-13064 and Page-5067 appear to represent the same person because: Many similarities except “Innes” in mothers name...”Innes” not certain.

Page-5067 and Page-12528 appear to represent the same person because: Many similarities, confusion surrounds wife Christian Innes/Gorsuch Page spelling, marriage date, etc. but they are both listed as his spouse.

Page-8639 and Page-5067 appear to represent the same person because: Same name and parents. Similar dates of birth/death; one is more specific than the other. Spouses' names are similar, in fact biography section of one of the spouses indicates multiple variations of LNAB
