Isaac PAICE.[1]
Issac was born in ~1778 in Tufton, Hampshire, England. Isaac PAICE was the second child of parents of Jonathan Paice (1746 - ~1824) and Elizabeth (Skeat) Paice (~1753 - ~1816). He was baptised at Tufton, Hampshire, parents listed as Jonathon and Elizabeth.[2]
He was one of five known children, with 4 siblings:
Isaac married Sarah Monk (~1786 - 1874) at Soberton Hampshire on 12 October 1807 and continued lived in the village for approximately 17 years. Soberton is believed to be about 3 miles from Exton (where Sarah was born) and about 25 miles from Tufton (Isaac's birthplace). St Peters Church in Soberton was built in the late 12th century although it has medieval wall paintings. The tower was built in the early 16th century. St Peters was restored in 1881.[3] Witnesses to the marriage Mary MONK (believed to be her sister) and Jas? Tho? WHITE.[4][5]
The couple had at least 9 children:[6]
Isaac worked as a farm labourer for most of his life. Between 1807-1817 they resided at Soberton where Sarah, Elizabeth, Isaac, Jacob, Abraham and James were born. The family then moved to Hazleholt in Droxford from about 1820 where Jane, Charlotte and George were born between 1820-1825.[16]
The White Lion pub in Soberton dates from the 17th century. In 1801 Soberton had a population of 672. B y the standards of the time it was quite a large village and during the 19th century Soberton grew much larger. By 1901 Soberton had a population of nearly 1,200 although it was scattered over a wide area.[17]
According to his death certificate he died of consumption on 15 March 1839 at Droxford Hampshire at the age of 61, leaving Sarah his wife of 32 years, a widow at aged 51 years. (The death certificate is issued from Droxford Union - could he have died in the workhouse?) He was buried at Droxford according to the church records on 10 March 1839, so the date of death on the death certificate must be wrong.[18][19]
Rebecca GODWIN (nee COOK) was present at the death of Isaac and signed her name with her mark 'x' ; she would have been abt 49 at the time. Rebecca married John GODWIN at Exton, Hampshire on 23 May 1808. Rebecca appears to have been a neighbour and was still living next door to Isaac's wife Sarah (nee MONK) as late as 1851. Rebecca was born in Warnford, Hampshire, in the same area as the PARKER's and also appears to be living nearby lots of CARPENTERs. Sarah MONK was born in Exton Hampshire another area where PARKER's came from, so it seems likely Rebecca may be a relative. Even so, I have been unable to confirm a familial relationship of any kind.
