Biography

Daniel and Jeanne Roujot signed a marriage contract on March 5, 1748 in New Orleans.[1]A transcript of a translation of the marriage contract,[2] found attached to an ancestry tree indicates that Daniel Pain, the groom-to-be was the son of Daniel and Marianne Pain and that he was a native of Les Epaux, Parish of Marssac in the Bishopric of Saintes and that he was the Keeper of the King's warehouse at the Post in Natchitoches. Jeanne, meanwhile was the minor daughter of an employee of the King's warehouse. The former bishopric of Saintes is in Charente-Maritime Department of today.[3] Marssac seems likely to mean Meursac as there is an Les Épeaux, Meursac, Poitou-Charentes, France.

Their first known child was born in 1751, Francois Daniel Pain, fils in Natchitoches[4] His baptism record, unlike any other record for his father, describes him as a surgeon at the post. This seems likely to be either a mistake in the transcription or just a mistake upon the part of the priest. It seems unlikely that one would go from the keeper of the warehouses at the time of his marriage contract to surgeon in 1751 and then back to royal warehouse guard or such with later children's births.

Daniel Pain's name appears frequently as a witness in civil records of St. John the Baptist Parish.

On November 26, 1788 Daniel stated the provisions of his last will and testament.[5] In this, he includes payment of his daughter Pelagie's dowry which is still owed to his son-in-law, Barthelemi Charbonnet, then living in Santo Domingo.

A number of family trees use December 5, 1788 as the date of his death, but I have not come across a source for that as of yet. However, we do know he died between November 26, 1788 when he made provisions for his will and December 19, 1788 when the property of the late Daniel Pain was inventoried.[6]
