Biography

Amelia Pain was born about 1836. She was the daughter of William Gregson Pain and his wife Mary Harrison.

In the 1851 England Census, Amelia Pain (aged 15) was recorded living with her father Wm Gregson Pain (48 and a Hatter), her mother Mary Pain (38) and her three siblings Mary Pain (17), Clara Catherine Pain (8 and a Scholar) and Walter Alfred Gregson Pain (5 and a Scholar) at Bishop Gate Street, Saint Peter upon Cornhill, City of London, London & Middlesex. Also in the household was one servant.

At the age of 23 she married 35 year old Goldsmith John Surman on 25 August 1859 at St Peter Cornhill, City of London[1]. The witnesses were William Gregson Pain and Mary Pain.

They went on to have at least 7 children.

In the 1861 England Census, Amelia Surman (aged 25) was living with her husband John Surman (38), who was a Goldsmith's Assistant, at 202 Bishops Gate Street, St Botolph Bishopsgate, Middlesex with their firstborn son John Gilbert Surman who was under a month old. Also in the household were four servants.

Her husband John died 10 May 1870, aged about 48.

In the 1881 England Census, Amelia Surman (aged 45 and living off Dividends) was recorded living with her children John Gilbert Surman (21) Constance Amelia Surman (20), Florence Hopgood Surman (18), Harold Hopgood Surman (16) and Ada Bilton Surman (10) in Amersham Rd, St Paul Deptford, London, Kent.

By 1891 Amelia Surman had moved to 47 Breakspears Road, St Paul Deptford, London, Kent, England. She still had four adult children living with her; Florence Surman (28), William Surman (24), Cellina Surma (22) and Ada Surman (20), as well as one servant.

Amelia was resident at Oldfield House, 47 Breakspears Road, Brockley, Kent when she passed away on 22 September 1910 and was interred at Nunhead Cemetery[2].

Obituary

THE LATE MRS. SURMAN.
The death occurred on Thursday of last week, at her residence, 47, Breakspears-road, Brockley, of Mrs. Amelia Surman. The deceased lady, who was in her 75th year, had been ill a few days and her death was due to an affection of the heart.
The funeral took place on Tuesday. The first part of the service was conducted at the house by the Rev. C. H. Grundy, Vicar of St. Peter's. In a short address the Vicar referred to Mrs. Surman as the most unselfish of women, a splendid mother, devoted to her home, and one who would be greatly missed. They laid her to rest in sure and certain hope.
The interment took place in the family grave at Nunhead Cemetery., the Rev. C. H. Grundy reading the committal sentences. The chief mourners were the Rev. J. Gilbert Surman, Rector of Healing, Lincolnshire; Mr. W. C. H. Surman, Mr. C. L. Surman (sons), Mr. W. A. G. Pain (brother), Mr. Arthur Clark and Mr. Charlie Clark (nephews), and Mr. Parsons and Mr. W. L. Bailey (sons-in-law). Numerous wreaths from relations and friends were laid on the coffin. Messrs. John Chappell ad sons had charge of the funeral arrangements.[3]

Her Will was proved on 24 November 1910 at London to her children Reverend John Gilbert Surman, William Charles Harrison Surman, tailor, Ada Bilton Parsons (wife of Frank Parsons) and Cellini Mowbray Surman, clerk[4]. Effects: £5435 7s. 10d.

Her son Reverend John Gilbert Surman passed away on 20 December 1917 at age 58. He was the rector of Healing, Lincolnshire and the following plaque commemorates them both, probably at Healing:

WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE SEPT. 22ND 1910,
AGED 74 YEARS.
