Apprenticeship records show that Edward’s younger brother, John, was apprenticed to him as a butcher. The indenture was entered into on 4 April 1681 for a term of seven years “in sicknesse and in health” from 25 March 1681, with double apparel at the end of the term. As apprenticeships usually started at the age of fourteen or fifteen, it seems therefore that John was born in about 1656.
John Paine did not marry until about 1690, when he was some 34 years of age. His wife Mary gave birth to six children, Elizabeth in 1691, John in 1692, Philadelphia in 1694, Edward in 1695, Thomas in 1697 and David in 1700. Both Elizabeth and David died in infancy, and it is not known what happened to Philadelphia. The two eldest sons, John and Edward became butchers but because there may not have been room for all of them in the family business, Thomas, the youngest surviving son became a joiner.
