He was a blacksmith like his father.

Research Notes

Father born in Illinois; in 1870 Census Lorin [sic] is enumerated in the family of Charles H. Payne, age 42 b. Ohio, and wife Sophia, age 41, b. NY. He belongs in fact to the following family of Charles H. Payne, age 21, b. Ill, and Betsy Paine, age 18 b. IL. He was enumerated with the family of his grandparents Charles H. and Sophia Paine. In the 1860 Census the father Charles H. Payne age 10 b. IL is found in the household of Henry and Sophia Payne in Harrisburgh Village, Linn, Oregon. In the 1900 Census Lorin states that his parents were born in Illinois. This was the key to connecting him to this family.

1910 Census, Everett, Snohomish County, WA: Loran H. Paine, age 40, single, b. Oregon, is rooming at 2809 Rucker Ave., Everett. Occupation: blacksmith. [1]

1900 Census, Black Diamond Precinct, King, WA: Loran Paine age 31 Nov 1869 b. Oregon parents b. IL blacksmith Julia Paine age 27 Nov 1873 b. CA, father b. TN; mother b. IL; married 10 yrs, mother of 5, 5 now living John Paine age 9 b. WA Mar 1891 Kate Paine age 7 b. WA Jan 1893 Charles Paine age 6 b. WA Sep 1894 Loran Paine age 3 b. WA daughter May 1897 Nellie Paine age 1 b. WA Feb 1899 [2]

1880 Census, Harrisburg, Linn, Oregon 40 Moore Street, 10 June 1880 There are three mistakes in the FamilySearch indexing for Loren. First, the indexing gives the surname as Painew, when it is clearly written as Paine. The "W" in the race column is interpreted as "M" for "Mexican." The relation to Sophia Paine is given as "Sister" when it is clearly written as "Son." She is 52 and he is 11, so I conclude he is her grandson rather than her son. line 11 Paine, Sophia W F 52 divorced keeping house & washing b. NY parents b. VT line 12 Paine, Loren W M 11 son at home Oregon Ohio New York line 13 Cress, Charles W M 25 gets washing done gardener Iowa Ohio Ohio

1870 Census, Harrisburg, Linn, Oregon Lorin Payne age 1 b.OR last child in Charles H. Payne family, Charles H. is a pork Packer, born in Ohio age 42 wife Sophia is born in New York age 41. The children in the family are listed like this: Mary age 15 b. OR Curtis age 14 b. OR Sun (female) age 12 b. OR John age 10 b.OR Lorin Payne age 1 b. OR subsequent family is also Payne, and I believe these are his parents because they are born in Illinois, as he reported in the 1900 Census for Black Diamond, King, Washington Payne, Charles H. blacksmith age 21 (b. 1849) $250 b. Illinois (Loran Paine was also a blacksmith) Payne, Betsy age 18 b. Illinois Payne, Guss age 1 b. OR

The brother Augustus "Guss" Paine has a birthdate of August 1869 in the 1900 Census. This is problematic because Loren's birthdate in the 1900 Census is given as November 1869.

I do not know when and where Loran H. Paine died. The death date of 8 Oct 1977 and place Centralia, Lewis, WA belong to his son Loran Leroy Paine. In about 2005 I was leading a genealogy workshop in Marysville, Snohomish, Washington, where I met a gentleman with a query about his ancestor, Loran H. Paine, who, he said, had disappeared leaving his wife and children behind. He suspected that Loran had enemies.

In about 2013 I was leading a genealogy workshop at the senior center in Marysville, Washington and was queried by a descendant of Loran H. Paine. Apparently Loran abandoned his wife and children between 1900 and 1910 and no one knows what happened to him. He was working for the railroad and apparently felt threatened.
