Biography

James Paine was baptised in 1767 at Great Gransden, Cambs, son of Nicholas Paine 1722. James married firstly Ann Ingle, daughter of James Ingle of Low Farm Everton, on 18 December 1792 at Great Staughton, by whom he had two children. Ann died on 23 May 1806 aged 44. [MI Gamlingay Baptist] James became a member of the church at Gamlingay in 1805 and was soon chosen as deacon. He carried out his duties with diligence. He was deeply interested in the propogation of the Gospel throughout the world. He was possessed of considerable property and influence. James Paine makes even more money, runs the Baptist church after his father Nicholas, and died on 24 July 1831. There is a long obituary in Baptist Magazine in 1832 [The Baptism Magazine Vol XXIV] James married secondly Ann Sanderson, at Tetworth cum Everton on 15 September 1807, by whom he had nine children. The last five were baptised together on 30 June 1837. [parish reg] James was a farmer. “Certain it is that James Paine of Brook End House, Gamlingay would not have disgraced an Earldom, nor was his brother Jabez wanting in aristocratic bearing and all the other good qualities which do honour to the higher classes.” [exercise book of W Paine] “The family through all generations have observed the grand teaching of the Puritans and strictly kept to non-conformist principles.” [exercise book of Wm Paine of Nestebury, Latin Road, Hastings, September 1886. ] Will of James Paine of Gamlingay yeoman dated 9 March 1829 to wife Ann household goods sufficient to furnish three bedrooms a parlour and a kitchen and an annuity of £150, the tenement in Mill Street cccupied by Ann Grey, to daughter Ann wife of James Charles £1000, to daughters Sarah, Hannah, Jane, Mercy, Emma, Ellen and Mary Ann £2000 each and to sons James and David, executor nephew James Paine of Toseland farmer. James died on 24 July 1831 aged 67 and Ann on 5 September 1867 aged 79. [MI Gamlingay Baptist] In 1841 Ann was a farmer living at Brook End, Gamlingay with Hannah 31, Ellen 19 and Elizabeth 10. In 1861 Ann was a widow aged 71 living in Church Street between the grocer’s shop and the almshouse in Gamlingay with her son James 35 and a servant.
