Biography

Stephen Pane, the son of Dane Pane, was baptised on 28 December 1602 in Little Ellingham, Norfolk, England.^[1] As the son of Dann Paine and his wife Margaret, he was previously said to be born sometime between 1602 and 1607 at Great Ellingham, Norfolk, England.^[2]

Stephen Paine was married in Norfolk, England, by 1629, (birth of son, Stephen) to Neele Adcocke, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Eldred) Adcocke. Stephen and his wife resided at Great Ellingham in Norfolk. ^[2]

The first U.S. publication of the surname and parents of Stephen Paine's wife Neele was in 1989.^[2] Earlier publications name her as Niobe or Rose and may identify Neele as her surname rather than her given name. For example, Torrey's New England Marriages gives her name as Rose, last name unknown, and states that she is called Niobe in her death record.^[3] The name Neele is an unusual one that has been challenging for transcribers of the records. It has been suggested that the name might actually be "Noole." Some transcribers of records recorded it as "Niobe" or "Rose," but Sidney Paine rejects these interpretations. Regarding "Rose," Sidney Paine remarked that "readers familiar with 17th century script have little difficulty understanding how [the name Neele] could be mistaken for the more common name Rose."^[2]

June 1638 Stephen Paine, his wife and four children were passengers on the Diligent. They arrived in Boston 10 Aug 1638. Banks uses Rose as Mrs. Paine's given name.^[4]

1641 Dec 10: At a meeting of the Massachusetts Bay Colony General Court, was selected as one of four men to "view the way at Braintree" and certify to the next Court meeting. ^[8]

Stephen married second Alice _____ (aka Elizabeth), widow of William Parker of Taunton.^[2]

The will of Stephen Paine dated 18 July 1679 and mentioned "my wife Elizabeth."^[10] Also, the inventory was taken on 11 September 1679, and it mentioned "mistress Elizabeth Paine."^[11]

It seems to refer to Stephen's second wife, Alice, widow of William Parker.
