Edward Paine deposed on May 3, 1630 that he was aged 31, therefore deducted he was born in 1599, probably in England.[1]
Edward was a mariner, the master of the Refuge of London.[1]Captain of the Susan and Ellen[2]
He migrated to New England in 1638, residing at Charlestown.[3] In 1638, within the Charlestown limits, Edware Pane (Paine) owned 30 acres of "earable land and meaddow at the west end," "ffour milch cows," "ffive acres of earable land in mistick feilde," "two and a half acres of meaddow lying in mistick marshes," fifteen acres of land in mistic feilde, ffortie and five acres of land in waterfeilde".[4]
Edward Paine married, we know from his will the first name of his wife is Sarah, surname unknown
Children:
In the 1640s he returned permanently to England, residing at Wapping Middlesex.[3]
In 1640 - 1641 Edward's attorney William Phillips sold 6 acres at Wormwood point and his cow lots. He deeded to his eldest son Joseph, the house lately in the hands of E. Gibbons, and the lots at Mystic ponds occupied by W. Powell, tenant. Witness was William Payne: 1649.[2]
Edward's estate passed probate on 14 February 1645.[5]

The William Payne mentioned in the Will is interesting as what I’ve looked at for a William Payne of Ipswich, Massachusetts says that he was from Suffolk. I’m guessing that he may be related to Edward however he is not named as a kinsman , brother etc. I don’t have access to all the American records though so someone else will have to investigate if there is any connection. My knowledge of American geography is zilch and I have no idea whether Charleston is anywhere near Ipswich. Must get Google maps up.

Ann

Any records of a William Payne/Paine + various spellings who in 1630 was in Ipswich in NEw England and described as a yeoman? He may be a brother of Edward's or a kinsman , cousin, uncle etc. Unfortunately relationship is not stated.
