Biography

Disputed Identity

The family bible of Richard Cornell, identifies Hester Paine as the wife of Jacob Cornell and gives their date of marriage as 30 December 1698.[1] This is, however, contradicted by a deed of sale executed on 9 Feb 1698/9 (just a bit more than a month after the reported date of the marriage) in which Jacob Cornell and his wife Esther Phillips, together with Martha Phillips (presumably her sister), sold their portion of land and meadows that Esther and Martha had inherited from their grandfather, Richard Owen of Newtown, Long Island.[2]

Records

Birth A Hester Paine, daughter of Richard Paine, was christened at Westbury-on-Trym, Gloucester, England, on 25 November 1683.[3]

Emigration On 1 February 1685 (or 1685/6), Hester Paine, age 23, daughter of Harbett Paine (deceased) of Shawditch, Middlesex, was bound to Joseph Athy for four years in Montserrat. [4]

The 2003 research article cited here refutes the notion that the wife of Jacob Cornell was Hester Paine. His wife was Esther Phillips.

I have looked for other sources to substantiate the life of this person as a different person from Esther Phillips, and I did not find much, but I do not know this family. In case other members have sourced information for Hester Paine, I am going to disconnect this profile from Jacob Cornell and his children, and I will create a new profile for Esther Phillips.

Please check birth place, if she was baptised in England, was she also born there?
