John's father died when he was very young. His mother worked as a nurse to support the family. Little is known of his youth. He married Elizabeth Sims, who died shortly after giving birth to their only child, a daughter. John was baptized into the Church in February 1862, and left for America two months later with his little daughter, Elizabeth. The captain of the ship wouldn't let him take Elizabeth unless he had a governess for her. he chose one of the unmarried ladies aboard ship and they were married before the ship sailed. After arriving in the Valley, they went on to Nephi where they remained. John soon adapted to farming and did some building and weaving on the side. He soon prospered. He also was involved in the Black Hawk Indian War. When he married Mary Ann's sister, he soon found that Sarah was extremely jealous of Mary Ann, so he built a small house for her. His sons worked for other farmers and gave their wages to their father. John remained active in the church and filled a mission to England in 1897. He owned much land around Nephi and a mercantile store. He enjoyed singing and kept in touch with his friends and remained active in church and community affairs.
