James married Agnes M Murray (born on 14 Mar 1866 in Scotland). Their known daughter was Agnes Murray Paisley (1900–1976).

James died in 1957 in Albert, New Brunswick, Canada, aged 89. He was buried in Hopewell Hill Cemetery, Hopewell Hill, Albert County, New Brunswick.^[1]
