  • Mother: Doris; Arnold was the oldest of 4 children

  • Palmer's father, Milfred J. "Deacon" Palmer, was the superintendant & house professional at a 9-hole golf course where the family lived in staff housing; he purchased that Latrobe (Pennsylvania) CC in 1971.
  • Sports Illustrated named him sportsman of the year in 1960
  • In 1963, Palmer became the first professional golfer to break the $100,000 barrier for winnings
  • Chosen as the 1960s "Athlete of the Decade" in an Associated Press poll
  • One of the greatest professional golfers of all time, inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in its inaugural class, 1974
  • Inducted into the PGA of America Hall of Fame
  • He inspired a broad following, known as Arnie's Army, changing the perception of the sport as an exclusive, elitist pastime. As the sport moved onto television in the 1960s, Palmer was the first TV golf superstar
  • His first big win, the US Amateur title in 1954, remained his favorite
  • Palmer was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2012, only the 6th athlete to be so honored. Everything else in Washington may be intensely polarized, but the attendance for Palmer's event was robustly bipartisan. In addition, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004, from Pres.   • Palmer has earned a variety of regional awards as well, such as membership in the Carolinas Golf Hall of Fame, 2007
  • From modest beginnings, Palmer was worth an estimated $675 million at the time of his death
