Biography

Please help me find his parents! 1860 census is only certain census record for him at this time. It notes Virginia as place of birth but I'm not sure it's correct because 1880 and subsequent census records for his children indicate he was born in Ohio. There are 1850 census records in Clark County, Ohio for F.M. Palmer, Francis Palmer, and F. Palmer. All men are laborers in homes or boarding.

Francis M. Palmer mustered into service on August 25, 1862 at Camp Piqua, Ohio, near Springfield. He joined the Ohio Volunteer Infantry, 94th Regiment, Company G, as a Private under the command of Captain Charles C. Gibson. He saw action at the Battle of Perryville (KY) on October 8, 1862. On the march toward Bowling Green and engagement with General Bragg's Army, he became sick and died of pleurisy in the Bowling Green Hospital and was buried on the hospital grounds. When the Nashville Cemetery was organized, he was interred there with others from his regiment.

Palmer married Elizabeth Ann Porter on February 9, 1854 in Clark County, Ohio. They had 3 children: Jonathan Colin, Charles F., and Laura Josephine.
