Biography

Nehemiah Palmer was born Nov. 2, 1637 at what later became Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony[1][2][3][4]. He was the third child of Walter Palmer and his second wife, Rebecca Short Palmer.

He was christened 22 NOV 1637, at Charlestown, Massachusetts.

He migrated with his birth family from the Boston area through Rehoboth, Massachusetts, which at that time was adjunct to the Plymouth Colony, and governmentally separate from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. They continued their migration to Stonington, Connecticut, where they settled.

Nehemiah Palmer married 20 Nov 1662 Hannah Lord Stanton Palmer (1647 - 1727)[5][6][7] [8][9]. They had 6 children:

  1. Joseph Palmer (1663 - 1710)
  2. Elihu Palmer, b. 12 Mar 1666; died young; - note potential confusion re. his birth date and baptismal date, 14 Dec 1674
  3. Jonathan Palmer (7 Aug 1668 - 26 Aug 1726) - note potential confusion re. his birth date and baptismal date, 14 Dec 1674
  4. Daniel Palmer (1672 - 1762)
  5. Nehemiah Palmer (1677 - 1735)
  6. Hannah Palmer (1680 - 1757)

The freeman's oath was administered to Nehemiah Palmer by the Court at Hartford, Connecticut, May 10, 1666. From this time, he took a prominent place in the management of civil affairs in Stonington; was first elected deputy of the General Court of Connecticut on My 15, 1668, and was re-elected to that important position for fifteen sessions. In May 1681 he was on of a committee appointed "for hearings on the Indian question and to buy land from the Indians." (Connecticut Colony Records, first 4 vols.)

December 11, 1683, he bought one hundred acres of land from his brother, Benjamin Palmer, at Shownoak (Stonington Land Records, vol. 2, page 291)

Nehemiah Palmer died Feb. 17, 1716/17 at Stonington New London County Connecticut[10][11]. His remains are buried at Wequetequock Burial Ground, located northeast of Stonington, New London County, Connecticut, USA [12][1].
