Biography

Born either Pennsylvania per his son, William Truman Palmer's information for death certificate in 1912, or Ashtabula County, Ohio, per Findagrave.com memorial #76975369. 1910 census has his birth in Ohio, 1868 marriage record has his birth in Ohio. 1850 census has birth in Ohio.

1850 lived with parents, 2 siblings, and 2 lumberjacks named Jeremiah Rulin and Joseph Phillips in Monroe, Ashtabula County, Ohio. 1850 attended school.

1860 lived with parents and 6 siblings in Conneaut, Erie County, Pennsylvania. An Andrew J. Ruland, age 43, carpenter, also lived with them. Andrew Ruland owned $2,500 in land and $500 in personal property. 1860 was laborer.

Civil War Service for Union Army: Private 6th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, Company L, entering service Nov. 19, 1861 for 3 years; discharged Jan. 31, 1863 on Surgeon's certificate of disability. Was he injured from Fredericksburg, VA battle of Dec. 13, 1962, 10th bloodiest battle with Union casualties 3 to 1 over Confederates?

Married Mary E. Carter Jan. 17, 1868 in White Pigeon, St. Joseph County, Michigan, before a justice of the peace, G.G. DePrivy. Mary was from Fulton County, Indiana and they moved to Ashtabula County, Ohio upon marriage. He was a millwright per the marriage record. Oral family history from his grandson, Russell H. Palmer in the 1980s was that he made whiskey barrels.

Cannot find 1870 census; Ancestry.com has he and his wife misindexed under Harvey and Mary Joslin's census record, page 33 of Conneaut Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. Checked all 38 pages of the township records and found no John and Mary Palmer.

1872 first child, William Truman Palmer, born in Erie County, Pennsylvania.

1875 second, child, Frank, born in Elkhart County, Indiana.

1880 lived with wife, Mary, and 3 children, in Union Township, Elkhart County, Indiana. 1880 occupation: cooper.

1900 lived with wife and 2 sons on farm in Union Township, Elkhart County, Indiana. 1900 owned his farm, subject to a mortgage. 1900 was a day laborer.

1910 lived with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and a grandchild by another child, in Union Township, Elkhart County, Indiana. 1910 owned the farm free and clear. 1910 he was farmer.

Cause of death: Senile Gangrene (65 days) on Sept 5, 1912, with contributing factor of Phlegmonous Erysipelas (6 days), treated between July 1 and Sept. 5, 1912. Death certificate informant: son, William T. Palmer.

Buried September 7, 1912 in Yellow Creek Frame Cemetery, Southwest Elkhart County, Indiana, Row 19, North Frame.
