Biography

Jacob Palmer was born in New York about 1816.[1] He was the son of Henry Palmer and Lydia Lockwood.

"Item number 2: I hereby divise and bequent to Phoebe, Marion, Emma, Lyman, and Jacob Palmer, children of my deceased son, Jacob L. Palmer, by his wife, Lucinda, whose maiden name was Smith, the sum of $25.00 each within one year of my death but or much sooner as it can be conveniently done."[2]

On 23 Nov 1840, Jacob married Laura Lucippa Smith, daughter of William Smith and Miranda Palmer.[3] They had six children:[1][4][5]

  1. Phoebe Palmer (1841-aft. 1910); m. 1868, William Livingston[6]
  2. Marion Palmer (1845-1926);[7] m. 1867, Annie Hamilton[8]
  3. Emma Palmer (1848- )
  4. Lyman Palmer (1851-1921); m. 1879, Laura A. Carr[9][10]
  5. Jacob Palmer (c.1852- )
  6. John Palmer (1856- )

Jacob died between 1855 (son John Palmer was born c. 1856) and 13 Apr 1858 when his father wrote his will.[2] In 1870, Lucippa appears in the census with children Lyman and Jacob in the home of 25-year-old Ruel Fugit [Reuel Fugitt].[5] In 1900 Lucippa is living with her daughter, Phoebe Livingston, in Washington, Ripley Co., IN.[11] Laura Lucippa (Smith) Palmer died in Cass Township on 23 Jul 1901.[12]

Research Notes

Lucinda appears in all records as Lucippa (Loucipa, LucippI) or Laura Lucippa except in the 1860 Census when she is listed as 'Louisa'. She is only referred to as 'Lucinda' in her father-in-law's will.

Phoebe (Palmer) Livingston last appears in the census records in 1910.

Why was Lucippa living with Reuel Fugitt in 1870?
