1) - George was referred to as a "Jr" only twice in the information I have found . . . sons named after their father were not always accorded the "Jr" nomenclature in those times (nor was the father automatically a "Sr")(Stradling-375 23JUN2022).
2) - POSSIBLE BUT QUESTIONABLE: During the trip to the colonies, one of William Penn's ships was blown off course by a storm and was captured by Barbary pirates who then proceeded to ransom the survivors (a somewhat typical custom of the people and the times). "The Friend" newsletter (of 1702) details some of the efforts underway to rescue/ransom the survivors and the name, George Palmer is specially mentioned. [1] [My beliefs: first: the father had already passed away (smallpox was rampant then or maybe because of the storm?) so the name is not mistaken; second: George Jr supposedly requested that some of his land be sold to effect his release which would explain the reduced amount of acreage he actually received compared to what was supposed to be his. [but I have not been able to verify that he did receive reduced acreage, it was just mentioned - JhS]; third; why would he have been on a different ship than the rest of the family when "arriving sources" in Philadelphia state that he was on board the ship that contained the rest of the family - minus the father and fourth: there definitely was a George Palmer who was captured and ransomed as there are many sources that bear this out but his relationship to OUR George Palmer, if any, remains hidden.][2]
The exact date of George's birth is unknown; the date used for this profile is speculative based upon his baptism and on the ages of his siblings.
He was the son of George Palmer and Elizabeth Coates.
George was baptized on 9 JUN 1665 in Bermondsey, Southwark, Surrey, England so his birth would've been very close to that date as was the custom of that time. He was a son of George Palmer and his wife, Elizabeth as their voyage to the Colonies was recounted in Anna Shaddinger's "More Micheners in America". George, the father, passed away during the trip - 1682. [NOTE: George Jr would've been about 17 years of age during the voyage.] **
George, son of George Palmer, was baptised on 9 June 1665 in St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey, Southwark, Surrey, England.[3]
Thomas Palmer, his mother, three brothers and one sister arrived in 1682 in Pennsylvania. His father had died during the voyage. [4]
The land distribution plan for the Pennsylvania property that George purchased for his family (Elizabeth, the mother; the sons: George Jr, John, Thomas, William and the one daughter: Elizabeth [who had married Ralph Jackson] was detailed here.[5]
