Biography

Behm is the son of Mary and Wait Palmer. He was born 9 Oct 1792 in Galway or West Galway, Saratoga County, NY.[1]Note: Two census records list his place of birth as Montgomery County.[2][3]He was living with his parents in the Town of Galway, NY at the time of the 1800 US Census.[4]

Behm "was a blacksmith by trade, having been apprenticed to an older brother at Sacket Harbor at an early age. In time he opened his own shop at Rodman, Jefferson county, where he met Lucretia Crook..."[5]

Behm married Lucrectia Crook 27 Dec 1816 in Rodman, NY.[6] Rodman is located about 10 miles south of Watertown and east of Sackets Harbor. In July 1834, Behm moved his family "from the advantages of Rodman, Jefferson County and located in the Lysander wilderness three miles north of Baldwin's Bridge" (Baldwinsville Messanger - History of Town of Lysander Part 93 by Pearl Palmer). His wife stated many times in later years that she would never have consented to bring the family had she known that the farm her husband had bought was in truth, a tavern. Behm was a blacksmith by trade and quickly erected a shop a short distance from the tavern. Located on the Onondaga Hill-Oswego Highway (now called Rt. 48), the Halfway Tavern remained in the Palmer family for four generations. L. Pearl Palmer lived there until her death abt. 1980.

The children of Lucretia and Behm:

  1. Onias Lee (1818 - 1898) married Jane Lesley, settled in Lysander, NY
  2. Jennett Adaline (1820 - 1878) married Uriah H. Goble, lived in Dubuque, Iowa
  3. Melvin Pratt, twin (1822 - 1904) married 1st Sarah E. Wheelock, 2nd Sophronia Church, settled in Lysander, NY
  4. Maria Samantha, twin (1822 - 1893) married Daniel Gifford Wright, settled in South Haven, Michigan
  5. Pamelia Lucretia (1825 - 1902) married William Wallace Palmer, settled in Granby, NY

The 1870 Census for Lysander NY shows Behm living with his son, Onias. He is listed as a "Retired Farmer."[7]

Behm died 10 Aug 1873 in Baldwinsville, NY.[1] He is buried in Chase Cemetery, Lysander, NY.[8]

An excerpt from Behm Palmer Genealogy:[1]

"Behm told his children that his father was married twice. The father had nine children by his first wife; the second wife had nine when he married her and they in turn had three more; Behm said that twenty-one children in one family 'made Hell on airth'. The older children left home and looked after each other; Behm going to Rodman, Jefferson county where he learned the blacksmith trade from an older brother who lived at 'Brownville' near Watertown."
