Biography

Edward Palmer immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Edward Palmer, the son of William Palmer, was baptized at Ormesby St Margaret in Norfolk, England on March 29, 1623/4.[1]

Edward presumably emigrated from England to New England with his father, who was living in Watertown in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637.[1]

In June 1640, Edward was granted 4 acres of land for a house lot and an additional 3 acres adjoining his father's land.[2] It may be noted that Edward was still a minor at the time of this grant, but records indicate that several other grantees in the 1640 Hampton land grants were also minors, including Aquila Chase and John Sanborn, William Sanborn and Stephen Sanborn.[3]

An inventory of the land held by Thomas Chase in Hampton recorded probably about 1645 includes an entry for three acres of meadow that Thomas bought from Thomas Sleeper that had been granted to Edward Palmer and was bounded by the meadow of William Palmer then in the hands of Christopher Palmer.[4]

No record has been found that definitively shows Edward as a living person after the June 1640 land grant. He was not included in the list of Hampton commoners in February 1645/6.[5] It is therefore likely that he either died or moved away from Hampton in or shortly after 1640.
