Gilbert Palmer was born 8 Jun 1743 @ Stonington, Connecticut. He was the seventh child of John Palmer and Dorothy Noyes, and was a namesake for his earlier born (1734) sibling who died in infancy.
Gilbert Palmer moved to Hillsdale, Columbia County, New York probably immediately after marriage in 1769 or 1770. He lived there for the rest of his life as a farmer.
He served in the Revolutionary War in the 9th Albany Co. Reg. under Captain Hawley and Col. Van Rensselaer (Pension Records; D.A.R., v. 71,p. 137.) In the U.S. Census of 1790 he is listed in Hillsdale with two other males over 16, five males under 16, and four females.
His will is dated March 9, 1816 and was probated March 25, 1816. In it he mentions James as his oldest son, Nathan as his second son, other sons John, Gilbert, Moses, William, and Noyes, and daughters Nancy and Polly. Also mentioned are grandchildren Allen Judson Palmer and Catherine Lovinna Palmer, their shares being in trust to his son Noyes Palmer for their bringing up. The executors were his son-in-law Benjamin Soule and Ebenezer Soule.
Unfortunately, no one has been able to locate birth records for Gilbert's children and this represents the weakest link in our Palmer family genealogy. Our descent from Nathan Palmer is clearly documented in public records; and the descent from our immigrant ancestor Walter Palmer to his great great grandson Gilbert Palmer has been well researched and published in various places.
Only the jump from Gilbert Palmer to Nathan Palmer is not documented. It is included here on the basis of Horace Wilbur Palmer's unpublished typescript "Palmer Families in America" part 13, pp. 2075-8. The author admits that the connection is based solely on geographic location and the fact that there is a Nathan included in Gilbert's will. A footnote indicates that the author also saw a Palmer family bible (now lost) but that its owner, George Ellsworth Palmer, did not state that Nathan was the son of Gilbert and Mary (Jackson) Palmer of Hillsdale.
Thus, birthdates for Gilbert's children (except John) are estimated. John's date of birth was supplied by descendants and serves as a guide for estimating the others.
Gilbert and his wife are buried in the Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in North Hillsdale.

I believe the information on Gilbert Palmer in "Web: New York, Find A Grave Index, 1664-2011"
is either not correct or refers to a different Gilbert Palmer from the one who married Mary Jackson. I have Gilbert Palmer born 8 JUNE 1743 and died in March 1816. My source is Palmer, Horace Wilbur, "Palmer Families in America," unpublished typescript at New England Historical & Genealogical Society library, Boston. Part 13, p. 2075. Horace Palmer says that Gilbert Palmer's will is dated March 9, 1816 and was probated March 25, 1816.
