Biography

Richard Palmer, son of Edward Palmer and Merial Palmer, was born about 1583 in Gloucester, England.

Richard is named in the will of his father Edward Palmer dated 22 November 1624 and proved 15 December 1624 in Gloucester. Richard was bequeathed "seven hundred pounds, in hope my said son will provide for the good education and maintenance of Bridget his only child and daughter. ... if I shall happen to give unto my said son Richard the sum of two thousand pounds or more out of my profits of Virginia and New England, then the seven hundred pounds (as aforesaid) shall not be charged upon my personal estate &c. ..."[1]

Of interest is the passage "if I shall happen to give unto ... Richard ... two thousand pounds or more out of my profits of Virginia and New England, ..." This appears to indicate Edward might give outright to Richard 2000 pounds from his colonial profits. If so, Richard would not then receive the bequest of 700 pounds. It is unknown which eventuality took place.

Richard had one child, daughter Bridget Palmer; his wife is unknown.

Research Notes

There is no evidence Richard Palmer ever came to Virginia Colony. No records have been located in Virginia or New England for a Richard Palmer before 1655 and it is unlikely that Richard is this Richard. From the tone of his father's will, Edward Palmer did not place much reliance on son Richard. He left his entire estate "in Virginia or New England in the parts beyond the seas" to son Giles "with remainder to my son Thomas &c., then to Edward Palmer only son of my brother William." Richard received no part of the Virginia properties other than the possibility of the 2000 pounds mentioned in his father's will.

His death date and location have been changed to "after 1624" in England. (Strutton-11 17:59, 24 June 2022 (UTC))
