From James Palmer's biography of Thomas Palmer:

"Thomas Palmer and wife Sarah made their home near Morgan Missouri in Washington Township. They first built a log cabin and later as a family came along they built a large and beautiful frame house.

Tom and Sarah were very self sufficient as people had to be in those days. They made their own lye from wood ashes to use in lye purposes such as the making of Hominy...Their pots and pans were scoured with wood ashes. They canned and dried anything they could grow or gather such as wild berries and fruit from their own trees.

Meat was smoked in their smoke house or placed in a salt brine to preserve it for the winter months.

Sarah knew how to make many home medicines which were better known as home remedies and very likely this was all the medicine they ever had."
