Thomas Palmer was born in Chichester, Sussex, England.
Thomas was baptised at Chichester on the 29th of December 1790. He was the son of William Palmer and Celia Sharpe.[1]
Thomas married Ruth Wright on the 19th of February 1814 at St Marys, Portsea, Hampshire.[2]
They had three children in Portsea (Ruth, Thomas Powell, and George Wright) before relocating. They had two more children who were baptised at Chichester, Sussex.
Thomas gave his profession as book binder at his children's baptisms in Hampshire; and as book seller for those baptised in Sussex. In 1818, an advertisement appeared in the Hampshire Chronicle for an apprentice to the book selling and book binding business:
"WANTED immediately, -An APPRENTICE to the BOOKSELLING and BOOKBINDING businesses. Apply to Mr. T. Palmer, 174, Queen-street, Portsea. As he will be treated as one of the family, a premium will be expected." - Hampshire Chronicle, 30 March 1818, p4, c5
In the 1851 census, Thomas is recorded as a bookseller on South Street, Gosport. With him is his wife, Ruth, two of his adult children, Henry and Helen, and two grandchildren; George, and Alice.[3]
Thomas died of 'Old age and Debility' at the Alverstoke House of Industry in 1870. [4]
