Who was Katherine Nestyus?
Katherine was a captive of the Abénakis. Taken prisoner in 1687, at the time said to be about 12 years old. Her ancestry is obscure. It is assumed, she was the daughter of Thomas Stephen and Mary Caswell whose demise is to this day unresolved. She spent five or six years with her Indian captors, before, Nicolas Pinau, a French merchant bought her from the Indians. She became a servant in his household. Katharine, now called Marie Françoise, after a two-years service, decides to marry Jacques Paquet, son of Maurice Paquet and Françoise Forget, farmers. The wedding took place on July 28, 1697.
