Sarah Lockwood Pardee was born September 1839 in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, United States, the daughter of Leonard Pardee and Sarah W. (Burns) Pardee.
Sarah married William W. Winchester on September 30, 1862 in New Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut, United States.  William's father was the originator of the Winchester Rifle and owner of the Winchester Repeating Rifle Company.
In June 1866, Sarah and William had a little girl whole they names Annie P. Winchester. She died less than a month later.
William's father, Oliver Winchester, died on December 11, 1880, passing ownership of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company to William but William died of tuberculosis shorty after that on March 7, 1881.
Sarah became convinced they were cursed by the spirits of those who had been killed by the Winchester Rifle. She moved to San Jose, California and began building a chaotic mansion now known as the Winchester Mystery House in an effort to appease these evil spirits.  
Sarah also established the William Wirt Winchester Hospital in West Haven, Connecticut for the treatment of tuberculosis in honor of her husband.
