would make sense (that birth was Surry County). From Parishes of Virginia (page compiled/posted by Freddie Spradlin):

Albemarle parish, created 1738, served Surry Co to 1753 then Sussex Co to aft 1785. "Sussex Co was formed from Surry in 1753, and the parish went with it."

Not sure what to say about the 1734/1738 difference though.

I believe that Sussex County, VA was not formed until 1754. Could his place of birth be in Surry County instead? Thanks!

Mathew Parham listed as son-in-law of Capt John Maclin in his will (proved Brunswick Co., 1774).
