Hay (Park) Cameron was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land

Biography

Jean was born about 1829. The daughter of Jean Park and Edward (Unknown) Anonymous. [1] [2] In 1851 while employed as a Ladies Maid and living with her mother Jane Park (Hunter) along with sisters Mary, Elizabeth and Margaret. She was convicted for stealing sheets at Scotland, Edinburgh Court of Justiciary, and sentence for a term of 10 years transportation. [3] [4]

In 1852 she was transported to Hobart Town, Tasmania, Australia aboard the vessel Anna Maria to serve her sentence. [5] In 1853 she received permission to marry John Cameron.[6] She received a conditional pardon and married John Cameron in 1854 in Hobart. [7].

In 1859 husband John was acquitted of the charge of intent to defraud the sum of one pound.[8] Shortly after the death of son James the family left Tasmania for Maitland in NSW in 1860. [9]

She had another six children while living in NSW. In an effort to possibly leave her past behind, along with creating a better life for her family she departed for New Zealand with her husband in 1873 and changed her surname to Hay. She remained in New Zealand after the death of her husband John in 1890 for another 21 years. In 1892 Jean, daughters Catherine and Mary showed their support for women's right to vote by signing the New Zealand Women's Suffrage Petition while residing in Ponsonby, Auckland.[10]

The 1900 electoral roll has her living with daughter Catherine, who is employed as a postmistress, in Pahi. [11]

She moved to Sydney with daughter Catherine to live with younger daughter Mary Maitland in 1911. She passed away 12 months later in 1912, age 83 years, under the name Jane Hay and was buried Waverley Church of England cemetery. [12] [13] [14]
