Biography

Samuel David Park known as [Sam Park] was born to Charles Park and Ellen Kelly on 22 October 1867 in Anakie. The birth was registered at Steiglitz Victoria, Australia.

His baptism was celebrated on 17 November 1867 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Geelong Victoria. Sponsors were Mary Anne Connolly and James Murphy.

He married twice. First marriage to Bridget Ellen Kelly in Melbourne Victoria. and they had three children, but records only show two, it is surmised the first child was stillborn. The two recorded are Elizabeth Ellen [Nellie] Park and Liesia or Letitia Clara Park.

Second wife was Elizabeth May Duniham, a widow, with five children when she married Sam in 1924, at St Joseph Roman Catholic Church Meredith, Victoria. Her one child with Sam was named:- Samuel Charles Park.

Locals and newspapers reveal tales of Sam Park of Anakie; an early pioneer. In 1896 Samuel was moving from Anakie to Western Australia; his daughters appear to be in the care of his sister Ellen Park.

The Geelong Advertiser publication on 4 April 1896 was supplied by [Geelong History Centre] it reads-"by W. P. Carr, Thursday 9 April- 29 acres 3 roods, a splendid block of land fenced and improved with new cottages and outbuildings situated at the Anakies, joining Mr. Reale's property, and close to Messers Tucker, Kelly, Patterson and others; also 51 acres and 38 perches close to the above, partly fenced; a first class grazing block joining Messers Tucker and Reale. W. P. Carr has been instructed by Mr S. Park, who is leaving for Western Australia to positively sell the above mentioned in his office at 12 o'clock".

Local Stories- include; Sam Park was a strong man; known to carry seven coils of wire weighing 7cwt; he also had a heated argument with William Bourke over the burning of a firebreak. Riding a pushbike from Anakie to Rowsley while he was courting a widow, [probably his second wife] caused speculation.

In 1915 he handed the legalities of declaring his brother Charles to be presumed dead, he had been missing since 1893.

Sam's death occurred in 1934 and the event was registered as Parks.

Eastern cemetery entry in their records reads- Samuel Park born Anakie; a farmer.

Cemetery detail shows Elizabeth May Park of Rowsley opened the grave. However his name does not appear on any headstone so he is only presumed by cemetery informants to be in this family plot.
